In conversation with Robin Roberts, she discussed Cornell\u2019s strengths as a father and his decade-plus period of sobriety. She explained that Cornell had relapsed roughly a year before his death, after being prescribed the psychoactive drug benzodiazepine to \u201chelp him sleep\u201d after sustaining a serious shoulder injury.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn retrospect, I\u2019ve learned it\u2019s not supposed to be given to anyone who\u2019s in recovery,\u201d she explained. \u201cIf you have to give it, they have to be closely monitored, and it should not be given for more than two to three weeks.\u201d Cornell continued: \u201cIn a 7-day period, [Chris] took 20 pills, and in a 9-day period, 33.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cornell detailed her husband reaching out to a friend via email in&nbsp;two months before&nbsp;his death seeking help. She also recalled the singer\u2019s difficulties with performance, slowed speech, forgetfulness and general \u201cconfusion\u201d during that period. \u201cPeople say, you can\u2019t blame yourself,\u201d Cornell told&nbsp;<em>GMA<\/em>. \u201cBut there were signs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also disputed the police report that drugs had \u201cnot been a contributing factor\u201d to her husband\u2019s death, as she has been publicly doing since&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spin.com\/2017\/06\/vicky-cornell-people-interview-chris-cornell-death\/\">the summer of last year<\/a>. \u201cIf there was less stigma around [addiction], more people would speak up,\u201d Cornell said to Roberts. \u201c\u2026My husband was the furthest thing from a rock star junkie, he just wasn\u2019t.
